The Democracy Studio · Nevada City, California

Democracy runs on paperwork.
Most of it is unusable.

The Democracy Studio is building a more democratic world — through flagship products, and through digital campaigns we run for ourselves and for our clients.

Two arms, one purpose

Products that last, campaigns that move.

Flagship products

Software that outlives a single fight — redaction tooling built for the agencies answering records requests, legal-aid tooling built for the tenants and landlords on either side of an eviction notice. Slower to ship, and gated on review by people who are not us.

Digital campaigns

A site, the records work, the research behind it, and the tooling that lets someone actually act — plus a phone line when the thing needs a voice. We build them for ourselves and for our clients. The one running now is our own.

Disclosure

Josh Wolf, who runs this studio, is himself a party to the open Nevada County code-compliance case this campaign began with. It is our own case, scaled up.

The campaign · live

A county has a filing system. You have five days.

Nevada County opens code cases on a signed complaint that nobody swears to, and keeps no record of why. We are arguing that from both ends at once — one family's file in full, and the county-wide rule that file exposes. Two sites, two registers, one campaign, and it is ours.

The Story of HOME

growinghome.life · 10 pages · no trackers

One code case in full, told through the county's own filing cabinet. Across four rounds of requests the county answered in writing, twenty-five times, that a record does not exist — including the photographs its own officer took.

What it hands you
A request builder that writes a correctly-cited Public Records Act request in your browser. It runs client-side; nothing typed into it reaches us.

One family's file is a story.

Fifty is a pattern.

530 UTOPIAN

530utopian.help · (530) 886-7426

The county-wide demand that file exposes: a complaint alone should never be enough to open a case. Two channels, different jobs — the site argues in public, the line answers one person in private.

The site · 8 pages, no JavaScript
A 68-page report, five grand juries, eleven ranked reforms, and four letters pre-addressed to the Clerk with every supervisor copied.
The line · answered by software
For whoever is holding a code letter with a clock running. Deadline first, no argument, and it can carry a message to the Board as public comment.

The two sites and the line look and sound nothing alike, on purpose. A family's account of its own case reads as a printed pamphlet. A public demand on a Board of Supervisors reads as a poster. A call from someone with five days left gets neither — just the deadline, first.
How the three fit together

The campaign is how we learn what to build.

A campaign and a product look like different businesses. They are the same one, run at two speeds. Nevada County is the worked example: the campaign runs on public records requests, and PRAready is redaction software for the agencies on the receiving end of those same requests.

01

A campaign finds the break

In public, with documents. You cannot design for a government process from the outside — you find out where it fails by being inside one and filing the requests yourself.

02

A product serves everyone in it

What the campaign learns becomes software for the whole process, not one side of it. Recourse serves the tenant and the landlord. PRAready serves the agency answering the request. Neither takes a side; both make the process usable.

03

The product outlives the campaign

A campaign ends. The people it reached still have the problem. The product is what is left standing afterwards — and it is where the next campaign sends people.

Where this actually stands
One leg of that loop has run end to end: the campaign is live, and the records work behind it is what specified PRAready. The products have not reached anyone yet. We are describing the model we are building on, not a flywheel already turning.
Method

How this was made.

Research, drafting, code and design are done with a language model. The legal reading, the county files and every factual claim are checked by a person before they ship. Where something could not be verified, it is labeled unverified rather than quietly dropped — on the theory that what a county has not written down is itself part of the argument.

The machine does
Research passes, drafting, code, first-draft design, and the tedious document work that would otherwise never get done.
A person does
Every legal reading, every county document, every claim that carries a source tag, and the decision to publish.
Neither does
Invent a quote or a figure, guess who complained about you, or tell anyone how their own case will go.
Every call to (530) 886-7426 opens with

“We're not the county. Not an emergency line. Nobody here's a real person.”

530utopian.help/the-machine sets out what the line keeps, for how long, and what it will not do.

Check our work

Everything here is meant to be verified, not believed.

If you are a reporter, an attorney, or anyone doing diligence on this studio, start here rather than with us.

Every claim carries a tag

On 530utopian.help each factual statement is marked CODIFIED, PUBLISHED or OBSERVED, and unverified items are shown labeled rather than left out.

The county's own documents

Board memos, the complaint form, five grand jury reports and the budget pages are linked or mirrored, so you can read the source rather than our summary of it.

Pull the records yourself

growinghome.life carries a receipts page with the document set and instructions for filing the same requests we filed.

Where we concede

The campaign states what it is not arguing. Spite does not make a bad roof safe, and a danger an officer confirms goes forward regardless of who reported it.
